The launch event held at the KAS Foundation Office Ethiopia / African Union, based in Addis Ababa, significantly targeted policy makers at the federal level and international Organisations that deal with migration and child protection. Lukas Kupfernagel, the Country Director of the KAS office in Ethiopia expressed in his welcome remarks in which he expressed the Foundation’s commitment to partner with the people of Ethiopia in understanding and tackling the challenges that affect their society. Gregory Meyer, Project Manager at the KAS RP SIPODI East Africa, thanked in his opening remarks the partners and researchers for their contribution urging them to continue with such meaningful engagements. He was followed by Niklas Mayer, a researcher on migration and main coordinator of the conference and the research project, who gave a summary of the conference held at Wolaita Sodo University.
The publication event included a panel discussion that focussed on the policy solutions to the challenges of child migration in Ethiopia. Moderated by Dr Abebaw Minaye, Head of the Forced Displacement and Migration Studies at Addis Ababa University, the panel also comprised of Dr Girmachew Adugna, Center for Forced Displacement and Migration Studies, Addis Ababa University, Mr Getachew Alito, Advisor to the State Minister for Women, Children and Youth, Ms Enguday Meskele, Director of the Department for Migrants, IDPs and Refugees, Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, and Dr Eyueil Abate (Child Migration Consultant for IOM).
The panel recommended a number of policies to mitigate the challenges of child migration in Ethiopia including a review of the legal framework for migrations, children-inclusive research, policies and interventions, establishing stronger coping abilities and resilience so as to reduce the vulnerabilities of child migrants, return and integration programmes for child migrants, enforcing the national identification of all citizens, introducing school feeding programmes in order to keep children in school and strengthening prevention, protection, prosecution and partnerships in dealing with child migrations.
