This year, the African Union turns 60. On May 25, 1963, the African Heads of State and Government founded the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in Addis Ababa. This first truly pan-african organization on a continental level was to promote unity and solidarity among African states, coordinate and intensify their cooperation, defend their sovereignity, territorial integrity and independence, eradicate all forms of colonialism from Africa, and promote international cooperation.

We would like to use this occasion and look back to some of Africa's history to contribute to a better and more nuanced image and understanding of Africa. Every month until the end of 2023, we will highlight two to three important dates of the political, cultural, economic, and social history of Africa.
