Muslims as citizens
An international dialogue on civic engagement
A vibrant civil society requires engaged citizens whoactively participate in the shaping of the state andsociety. The viability of every democratic communitydepends on the engagement and participation of,ideally, all parts of the population. Today, in light of the growing number of Muslimfellow citizens in Germany and other Western societies, the civic engagement ofMuslims is especially important. How can Muslims participate in the developmentof state and society in majority non-Muslim countries? How can they contribute tothe common welfare while taking into account their specific interests as membersof a religious minority? How might Islam relate to or affect civic involvement andidentification with the wider civil society?
