And the winner is... Melony Ishola from Nigeria! The radio presenter from Lagos has won the first reporter slam in Africa, which was organized on the 6 June, 2024 in Cape Town by the KAS Media Program Sub-Saharan Africa.
On stage six journalists from Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe competed against each other. They all captivated audiences on site as well as via livestream worldwide with their powerful narratives and unique insights into the world of journalism. They each had ten minutes to do so before the final bell rang.
Founder and moderator of the Reporter Slam Jochen Markett said: "I've been organizing the reporter slams for eight years. First in Germany and – thanks to the KAS Media programme – for the past four years also abroad. But in Cape Town I experienced for the first time that there was singing and dancing both on stage and in the audience. A wonderful atmosphere."
Director of Media Programme for Sub-Saharan Africa Hendrik Sittig expressed: "An event like the Reporter Slam offers us as a media programme the ideal opportunity to bring journalism topics not only to experts, but to a broad audience. Reporters report on their work in an entertaining way – from different African countries. Viewers can thus better understand the role of the media and journalists in a democratic society."
