Roundtable Discussion with German MPs: Steering the Course of Digitalization

A Thai-German Exchange on Chances and Challenges of Digital Economy

The digital economy, characterized by the use of digital technologies and electronic communication, spans diverse sectors such as e-commerce, digital marketing, financial services, software development, and cloud services, to name only a few. This economic model has brought about a substantial shift towards online business interactions, enhancing user experiences, expediting processing, and facilitating easier access to services and products.

The digital economy has emerged as a main driver of economic growth both in developed as well as developing countries, expected to continue to further expand. According to estimates of the World Bank the digital economy contributes to over 15 percent of global gross domestic product (GDP), with a growth rate in the past ten years two and a half times faster than physical world GDP.

The rapid development in digital technology holds opportunities, especially in the field of generative AI whose impact on the digital ecosystem is projected to expand to a USD 207 billion market by 2030. But stakeholders are also facing challenges in ensuring a reliable and secure digital environment for businesses and consumers alike.

Against this backdrop, investments in digital infrastructure such as high-speed internet networks, data centers, and cybersecurity are necessary. Strengthening data privacy and protection, equipping the workforce with relevant skills as well as closing the digital divide within society are other challenges that all countries worldwide need to address.

The roundtable discussion, co-organised by Konrad Adenauer Foundation Office in Thailand, German-Southeast Asian Center of Excellence for Public Policy and Good Governance (CPG), and Asian Governance Foundation, will explore the chances and challenges in the further expansion of the digital economy through an exchange on developments and experiences in Thailand and Germany.

The discussion will be conducted in English.

The roundtable discussion will be held on Thursday, 15th February 2024, 18.00 – 19.00 hrs at “Renew” Room (L1 Floor), Mövenpick BDMS Wellness Bangkok. Registration opens at 17.30 hrs. Right after the discussion is a networking reception which we also cordially invite you to join.
