As part of European Neighborhood Policy, the Eastern Partnership was seen from 2009 onwards as the first serious attempt to engage with Eastern European states, also in view of the EU's own great interest in secu- rity, stability and enlargement. Today the Eastern Partnership acquires a growing importance. Most recently, with a new generation of association agreements for Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, the “Association Trio”, the EU put forward concrete ideas to replace the Partnership and Cooperation Agreements concluded in the late 1990s. As part of these association agreements, in 2014, the EU concluded negotiations on deep- ening the comprehensive free trade agreements with Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine to - among other things - improve access to goods and services, reduce tariffs and trade barriers and ensure legal frameworks. The three countries are also among the first, whose populations are benefiting from more mobility and the resulting opportunity for safe travel in Europe.
The tripartite format for enhanced cooperation, coordination and dialogue between the foreign ministries of Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine represents the clear desire for an even deeper cooperation with the EU and reaffirms its commitment to further progress in the implementation of the Association Agreements. A joint memorandum between the foreign ministers of Georgia, David Zalkaliani, Moldova, Aureliu Ciocoi and Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba was signed recently in Kyiv, Ukraine, on May 17, 2021, with the aim to establish the “Association Trio” as a format of enhanced cooperation and dialogue among the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the three EU Associated Partners, as well as with the EU.
What new goals and implementation methods does the new Memorandum hold? Where is potential for closer cooperation and where is there a need to catch up? How could the relationship between EU and the associated countries, but also between the countries of the Association Trio develop in light of this new rapprochement?
We are delighted to invite you to our upcoming event “Eastern Partnership at its best - The Newly Signed Memorandum of the Association Trio: A new Momentum for EU-Cooperation?” on June 24, 2021 from 10:30-11:30 via Zoom in the context of the recently signed Memorandum and especially in the context of the visit of the Foreign Ministers of the three partner countries in Brussels. Our speakers will be the Foreign Ministers of the Association Trio David Zalkaliani, Vice Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Aureliu Ciocoi, Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Moldova and Dmytro Kuleba, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
