Among its many other effects, the pandemic demonstrated both the fragility of the single market as well as its enormous importance for European economic stability and resilience. The sudden closure of national borders soon became an enormous strain on Europe ́s strongly interconnected free trade system, which had already been under considerable stress due to rising protectionism pre-pandemic. The European Commission’s subsequent setting-up of green lanes, in turn, which ensured the movement of essential goods and preserved important value chains, alleviated some of these problems. It also demonstrated that the single market is a vital tool in recovering from the pandemic.
The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) and the Federation of German Industries (BDI) have invited representatives from the upcoming Swedish EU presidency and the European Parliament to debate the question on how to most efficiently use the single market to not only aid the post-pandemic recovery but to take the European economy to new heights. At this years’ opening event of the KAS- BDI Single Market Workshop, the BDI will present its latest research paper on the topic and discuss with the participants its recommendations on how to advance the long-due task of deepening and completing the Single Market.
