In July 2016 the German Minister of Defence, Dr Ursula von der Leyen presented the new German Whitepaper on Security Policy in Berlin. Evolving conflicts in Europe’s direct neighborhood, the strengthening of the Islamic State, the terroristic attacks of Paris and Brussels, as well as the migration crisis prove a world in turmoil, seeking for peace and stability. Beyond current crises and conflicts our world is changing, and together with it the security environment changes profoundly. The achievements of the European post-war order cannot be taken for granted any more. The Federal Government of Germany reacts to this changed situation with the redefinition of the country’s security policy interests, its priorities and objectives as well as the advancement of its responsibility. Ten years after the last release of a German Whitepaper, the new Whitepaper sets the cornerstones of Germany’s security policy and the framework within which it operates. To debate the contents and the aims of the Whitepaper, we cordially invite you to attend the expert discussion on the 2016 German Whitepaper with Dr Géza Andreas von Geyr, Director General for Security and Defence Policy, Federal Ministry of Defence, Germany, Dr Thomas Bagger, Head of Policy Planning at the German Federal Foreign Office and MEP Elmar Brok (tbc). Other participants will be officials from NATO and the EU institutions, Ambassadors, as well as security experts from think tanks and academia.
