Despite their geographic proximity and their long-standing diplomatic relations, the ties between the European Union’s and Israel’s youths remain scarce and volatile.
However, the EU-Israel Association Agreement (Euro-Mediterranean Agreement) which came into force on 1 June 2000 and can be considered the latest basis for close relations between the EU and Israel and in particular the Action Plan formulated within this framework, call, amongst other issues, for a greater exchange between young professionals from Europe and Israel. Indeed, strengthening the ties between younger people can be considered an efficient way to deepen the respective understanding and further cooperation between the two partners.
In this context, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), the Young Israeli Forum for cooperation (YIFC), the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), and the State Government of North Rhine-Westphalia have launched a joint dialogue programme “Young Professionals Shaping European-Israeli Relations”, from Monday, 26 to Thursday, 29 October 2009.
