We’re excited to share Mapping North Africa’s Renewable Energy Future, a collaborative study by the Regional Program Energy Security and Climate Change Middle East and North Africa of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS-REMENA) and the Middle East Institute (MEI).

As the world moves forward in the global energy transition, North Africa finds itself at a pivotal moment. With its vast natural resources and strategic location, the region is uniquely positioned to lead in renewable energy development, unlocking economic growth, strengthening energy security, and reducing environmental risks. But persistent challenges—ranging from governance and financing to strategic planning—have often slowed progress.

This study explores how Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt are each navigating their path toward a renewable energy future. Beyond these individual stories, it dives into the bigger picture, tackling essential topics like the critical link between water and energy in a region facing severe water scarcity, the growing role of climate finance in driving the green transition, and the potential for regional cooperation to overcome political hurdles and create shared opportunities.

The goal of this work is to provide policymakers, researchers, and decision-makers with practical insights into the trends, challenges, and possibilities shaping renewable energy in North Africa.

You can read the full study on MEI’s dedicated webpage and also download it as a PDF attachment from the our website.
