Programme on “Potential for Indo-German cooperation in the Indo-Pacific” herunterladenOver the past decade, the Indo-Pacific region, which is predominantly, though not exclusively, maritime and connects four economically emerging continents - namely Africa, Asia, Australia and the Americas - has established itself as one of the most important geopolitical regions of our time as also a hot spot for geo-strategic ambitions for various actors, especially China.
This crucial strategic and economic importance of this region has also been recognised in geographically distant regions of the world, including Germany which released its first “Indo-Pacific Guidelines” in September 2020. With several European Union member states economies being highly integrated with the Indo-Pacific through trade, investment, and supply-chains, a free and open Indo-Pacific becomes crucial for the EU member states as also for India.
The question now arises, as to how these converging strategic interests can translate into new forms of cooperation and engagement between New-Delhi and Brussels/ Berlin? In which sectors could such potential collaborations become most discernible as well as successful? Furthermore, the question arises as to what the imperatives, the opportunities and the challenges would be for such enhanced potential cooperation between India and Germany/ EU within the Indo-Pacific.
