In view of the current discussions about political reforms in Jordan, KAS Jordan Office and the Ministry of Political and Parliamentary (MoPPA), a series of six workshops between May-June 2021 were held. During these workshops, many aspects of the Electoral Law and Political Party Law in Jordan were discussed and analyzed, such as reviewing Jordan’s Electoral Law, the history of the parliamentary elections in Jordan, reviewing different electoral systems, and comparing electoral systems used before in Jordan. Also, many questions were raised about which parts of the Jordanian Electoral Law attracts the youth to participate in the elections and how the Jordanian electoral system helps youth engage and participate in elections.

These workshops mainly focused on youth and women and how to encourage them to engage more with the political life in Jordan. In order to achieve such a goal, participants in the workshops were educated more about the electoral law and political party law and they were encouraged to come up with ideas and recommendations to enhance the existing laws regarding electoral and political parties in Jordan.

Notable recommendations made in the workshops include:

Reducing the age of candidacy for parliamentary elections

Abolishing the women’s quota while others suggest the opposite to increase the number of women's quotas

Create a national party list

Reconsider the number of parliament

Merging the Bedouin districts with the electoral districts

Encouraging party work

These recommendations will be brought to the attention of the Royal Committee.
