Freedom of the Press and the Codes of Conduct for Nigerian Journalists and Media Houses

Promoting Democratic and Good Governance

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung is organizing a capacity building workshop for selected journalists from the major media houses in Nigeria to enhance and update them on the current threats to the freedom of the press in Nigeria, and review with them the applicable codes of conduct guiding their activities.

With Nigeria ranking slightly better in 2020 than 2019 on the World Press Freedom Index, it is important that journalists reassess their conduct and work out ways to improve the freedom of the press in Nigeria, as this is one of the fundamental human rights. Expected at this seminar are journalists from radio, TV and print media houses, whose capacity will be enhanced through topics which include: Review of current trends relating to the Freedom of the Press; Official Secrets Act vs. Freedom of Information Act – Freedom of Press; Areas of Investigative Journalism in Nigeria; Code of Conducts for Media Practitioners; Media, CSOs and the State (the 3 Arms of Government and the Security Agencies): A Tripartite Collaboration towards Press Freedom; National Broadcasting Commission Act: Review and Oversight Codes, among others. The seminar is part of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung’s support to democracy, rule of law and good governance in Nigeria.
