The COVID-19 outbreak is continuing to disrupt vital and key sectors in the MENA region as countries continue to report rising numbers of confirmed cases of infection. The pandemic is having a dramatic economic and social impact and it is now challenging MENA economies’ ability to cope as the virus strains healthcare systems. According to IMF projections, the MENA region's economy is estimated to be contracting by about 3.3% in 2020, which is worse than the world average that is forecast to be 3%.With encouraging recent news about coronavirus vaccines, it is time to assess the impact of this pandemic’s unfolding crisis on many aspects in the MENA region and to tackle post-COVID recovery plans.
In this context, the Regional Program Political Dialogue South Mediterranean of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung jointly organises with the Mediterranean Economists Association, on 15 December 2020 at 3 PM CET, an online seminar entitled “the impact of COVID-19 on the South Med region”. The objective of this virtual event is to provide an overview and update on the potential impact of COVID-19 on the economy, the healthcare sector and the social status in the MENA region. The invited experts will highlight likely scenarios and possible solutions for recovery. Moreover, the online seminar will be an opportunity to present the latest publication of the regional program, themed” Assessing resilience of the healthcare systems in the Mediterranean”, which was jointly conducted with the Mediterranean Economists Association.
