The webinar began with opening remarks of Christian Hübner, Director of KAS RECAP. Kate Hodson, Partner and Head of ESG (Legal), Ogier talked about the evolution of ESG and its application in law. Firms are being driven to consider their own environmental and social performance and so new roles emerge within firms, such as heads of wellness, sustainability and diversity and inclusion.
Alex Lombos, Lawyer, Climate Programme, ClientEarth elaborated about his working experience addressing greenwashing via utilizing legal instruments. ClientEarth has previously filed a world-first lawsuit against the Board of Directors of Shell plc for failing to manage the material and foreseeable risks posed to the company by climate change.
Kiu Jia Yaw, Partner and Sustainable Development Lawyer, Kiu & Co. presented about the Malaysian experience in handling ESG matters in the legal field. Malaysia is still in the early stages of its ESG journey but is already ahead of the rest of ASEAN. Investing in capability and capacity building is critical in accelerating the ESG development.
