Media Dialogue 4:

The Mekong Runs Dry? Governance in Transition: A Close Look at current Rules and Geopolitics at Play

Facebook Live from SEA-Junction | Wednesday, July 29, 2020 | 17:00 – 19:30 (BKK Time)

The Mekong River flows through six different countries, making its basin a truly transnational region. This region is facing many challenges today. Dam building and development operations along the waterway affect the water resource management for the downstream countries. Droughts, fluctuations of water level and changes in ecological systems are considered the main impacts – threatening the livelihood of 60 million people as well as thousands of aquatic species. A stronger and more effective regional cooperation could improve the management of the river and restore some livelihood activities. Among tensions and geopolitical influences occurring in the region, finding the right mechanism seems to be the key.

The news agency Bangkok Tribune, supported by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in Thailand, is organizing an online conference to discuss and pave the way for the development of governance mechanisms in the Mekong Basin. This is in the hope to mitigate current negative impacts and to explore ways for each country to share resources properly while living in harmony.

This conference is the fourth of a series of Media Dialogues on current Thai, regional, and global developments organized by the Bangkok Tribune and the KAS. It will take place on Wednesday, July 29 from 17:00 onward (Bangkok Time) at SEA-Junction, Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC). Facebook Live from the venue will start at 17:25 and the conference will be conducted in Thai language.

To participate in the conference, please send an email to Thasuthida.thetthong@kas.de. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the conference either online or at the venue (in accordance with social distancing measures), and how to take part in the Q&A sessions with the panellists.
