With the overall aim to train elected party representatives in the understanding of political party functions and the importance of party structures in the co-ordination and recruitment of members, the Foundation for African Development (FAD) has conducted a training programme for district political party leaders from 12th to 13th July in Soroti. The two-day workshop was supported by Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung.

The training agenda included the importance of internal party democracy and party organisation, the understanding and development of party messages within electoral campaigns, media relations and party internal communications, party-voter relationships as well as membership recruitment and volunteer mobilisation.

District leaders of major political parties namely the Democratic Party (DP), the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), the National Resistance Movement (NRM) as well as the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) participated in the training. Since members of almost every Ugandan parliamentary party were represented in the workshop it constituted besides the regular program also the opportunity for an inter-party dialogue on general political questions such as the importance of parliamentary coalitions or the current economic crisis in Uganda.

The training was part of series of FAD-KAS activities to strengthen the role of political parties on a local level in Uganda.
