Teacher training seminars have been the core activity of Centropa in the past decade. They are opportunities for educators from all over Hungary to come together, expand their knowledge about 20th century Jewish history, learn about educational materials featuring personal stories, and share experiences and develop lesson plans with colleagues. Following this tradition, between September 17-19. 2021 we will organize a three-day accredited teacher training seminar in Budapest, where we bring together 30 educators from all over the country. During the seminar, participants will learn about 20th century Hungarian Jewish history through various activities, such as expert lectures, walking tours, and watching the educational short films of Centropa.
This year, the seminar will also have a special focus: the ‘Stories from a family album’ exhibition of Centropa, and a new educational package we have developed around it in cooperation with a group of experts in 2021. ‘Stories from a family album’ is a travelling exhibition created from personal stories and family photographs of Jews who lived through the 20th century, and whom Centropa has interviewed between 2000-2009. Teachers will have the opportunity to visit the exhibition, learn about the connected educational activities we offer through an interactive workshop, and in small groups, write lesson plans of how they would use the exhibition with their students. Veteran teachers will also inspire our participants by presenting how they have used the exhibition with their students in the past. We will strongly recommend teachers to invite the exhibition into their schools after the seminar, and use the project plans they have outlined.
