Every two years, KAS organizes a three-day fact-finding mission for the RTL students in the U.S. capital, organized by the staff in Germany and the United States. This time, 28 aspriring journalists participated.
Bringing young German media makers closer to the Americans – this is one of the most important tasks of KAS Washington Office, especially in difficult times. The students of today are the correspondents of tomorrow. This is why it is so important that the cultural characteristics of the United States are as well understood as the local media system and the nuances of the political system in Washington. Even if Germans and Americans think we know each other and have much in common, the differences are not to be dismissed.
Therefore, the agenda included discussions with national political experts regarding the upcoming mid-term elections, as well as meetings with American political journalists and German correspondents. The journalism students also had the opportunity to discuss specific policy topics, such as the proposed free trade agreement, with American economists and learn about transnational journalists’ cooperation in the field of investigative research.
After their visit to Washington, the group continued their travel to New York for further meetings, including a discussion at the RTL correspondent office.
