The use of glyphosate in Latin America and the Caribbean, especially in the increasingly industrialised agricultural sector, and in Colombia in the fight against illicit crops, represents a threat to environmental security in the region for three reasons: 1) damage to ecosystems caused by this pesticide, including to biodiversity and water resources; 2) social conflicts that have arisen around glyphosate due to the marginalization of campesinos in the face of large-scale agriculture and monocultures, which have led to violent conflicts between civil society and the public forces, as well as the risks of this substance to human health; and, 3) possible foreign policy problems caused by divergent policies on glyphosate use, both between LAC countries and with their extra-regional allies.
