The Importance of Start-up Business During COVID-19 Pandemic

The Corona crisis has now taken all areas of life and especially the economy will be hit hard. The governments of many countries have introduced extensive measures and programs to support companies and secure jobs. Startups and young entrepreneurs are particularly dependent on investments and financial support, so many of them are threatened with extinction. Thanks to their strength and flexibility startups could but also use the crisis as an opportunity and possibility for a new upswing.

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in Indonesia held a video conference together with Paramadina University on September 9th, 2020 to discuss the situation of startups in times of the corona pandemic and measures to deal with the economic crisis. Among the participants were besides economic experts and young entrepreneurs in particular representatives of the governments and administrations from different regions and provinces of Indonesia.

As a guest speaker, the Indonesian Minister for SMEs and Cooperatives, Teten Masduki, spoke about the government's measures and rescue programs to protect the economy and companies, with particular reference to the situation of Indonesian startups. The situation and experiences of startups in Germany were presented by Prof. Patrick Ziegenhain and Malte Fritsche from Bitkom. Dr. Sandiaga Uno, a successful entrepreneur and investor, gave some suggestions and advice for Indonesian startups based on his own business experience. Useful information and advice on possible financing of start-ups were provided by the CEO of Mandiri Capital, Dr. Eddi Danusaputro.

The event with more than 140 participants is part of an economic dialogue that KAS has been conducting for several years with Paramadina University and other partners from the government and civil society in Indonesia.
