India as a superpower? Hindu nationalism and New Delhi's foreign policy ambition

India is the most populous country in the world, and its economy is the fifth largest in the world. New Delhi's foreign policy ambitions are correspondingly high. In this episode of our podcast, we take a closer look at India's foreign policy and its guiding motives. We ask to what extent reality can keep pace with the country's self-image as a great power. We also take a look at the Indian parliamentary elections and the policies of Prime Minister Modi, who is popular with large sections of the population, but whom critics accuse of pursuing a “Hindu nationalist” policy that fuels resentment against minorities. Our guest is India expert Lewe Paul.

Battle for space? Dr. Antje Nötzold on the rivalry between the superpowers in space

Strategically important satellite positions in space, access to orbits and resources and a new race to the moon: the superpowers have long been competing (again) in space. But how are they actually going about it? What ambitions is China pursuing and how is the USA reacting? Why could space become a place of direct warfare in the future and how can an escalation be prevented? And what does the war in Ukraine teach us about the growing importance of developments in space? This is what we discuss in this episode with political scientist Dr. Antje Nötzold from Chemnitz University of Technology.

Danger in the Red Sea: Yemen's Houthis and the freedom of navigation

For months, the Houthi Militia has been attacking merchant ships off the Yemeni coast with drones and missiles, among other things. This is where the Bab al-Mandab strait, which connects the Gulf of Aden with the Red Sea and is crucial to the global economy, is located. In response to the attacks, both the USA and the EU have launched missions to secure the sea routes. The German navy is also on the ground and the operation is considered very dangerous. But what is the calculation behind the Houthi attacks? What role does Iran play? And what specific challenges does the commitment to protect merchant ships face? In this episode, we discuss this with Philipp Dienstbier, security policy expert and Director of the Regional Programme Gulf States at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.
