The importance of Latin America at the COPs on Biodiversity and Climate Change, regarding Cali 2024 and Belém 2025

The COP16 on Biodiversity left lights and shadows. The growing and vibrant participation of organizations, collectives and the general public from the green zone was contrasted with the slow progress in high-level decisions in the still tedious discussion of resource mobilization for the 23 targets to 2030 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, there is hope, but there is a lack of policy.

The COP30 in Belém, the first to be held in the Amazon, will arrive with high expectations (after some editions held in countries that are, to say the least, “questionable” because of their oil base) to put on the table and hit hard at the negotiating tables the mobilization of resources to achieve the Paris agreements and stay as far away from 2°C as possible, since everything indicates that the 1.5°C barrier has been surpassed. Brazil must lead the region so that the presence in Belém at the political, economic and social level is solid, serious, based on science and as a bloc as a region. It will be the moment, we must not let it pass.

Latin America has everything to be the protagonist of its own history

From Tijuana to Patagonia we share a single mother tongue (Spanish) and a sister language that is not a major difficulty for communication (Portuguese). They share common histories and millenary pasts, transboundary ecosystems and cultures with similarities. It has people with capacity, quality and good intentions.  Latin America must set out on the road to the well-being of societies and nature. For this, it is necessary to establish new narratives of different presents and possible futures that must be multiplied. There are narratives that must, by insistence and dissemination, enter our way of perceiving the world. A greener, more balanced one.

Latin America is much more than its problems, its colonial heritage, its inequalities, its violence and its corruption at various levels.  Latin America is at the moment and has the capacity to stop being a promise, a source of extractive wealth or exotic postcards and to start pounding the table of world geopolitics so that the voice of the north, the center and the south, of the coasts and the mountains, of the jungle and the mangroves, of the cities and the countryside, of the communities and the neighborhoods can be heard; that cry out for a better world, where ecosystems are conserved and their resources are well used, where energy comes from the sun, from the air, from the interior of the earth and from organic gases, where the economy circulates and serves for well-being and not for greed, where diversity persists, multiplies and sustains life in that thin layer that surrounds the planet: the biosphere, the only place we can call home.

This is the last report of an event in EKLA KAS, to all those who accompanied us these almost 10 years in the ideal of a sustainable Latin America: thank you very much! We have made some progress in our journey and we hope that we will continue to travel along these routes and expand many more.
