In the initial dialogue of the event, we had the participation of María Eugenia Rinaudo from EAN University, Colombia and Pablo Necoechea from ESG Academy, Mexico, who commented on their appreciations about the role of LATAM in COP26 in Glasgow, an event in which they participated as observers. As a general analysis, in this COP it is evident that the Science-Policy interface takes on greater relevance in the public debate, however, not yet at the necessary speed, so, for example, strategies such as nature-based solutions (demonstrated in its effectiveness) have not yet penetrated deeply into strategies against climate change.
Focusing a bit on the analysis in LATAM, both speakers agreed that Climate Financing is one of the main points going forward, both because of the disbursement commitments that would come and because of the institutional framework that it will require so that transparency in the proper use of these resources are not tarnished by acts of corruption. It is also clear that LATAM still does not have the global geopolitical weight that it should, so we must continue in the effort to strengthen regional integration in climate and environmental aspects.
On the second day of the event, Nicole Stopfer, director of the EKLA Regional Program, explained the 4 themes (Circular Economy, Energy Transition, Sustainable Cities and Biodiversity) and the projects that have been working on each of them.
After several rounds of questions and comments, it is clear that there is much work to be done and together with partners we will continue promoting projects for a more sustainable, fair and resilient Latin America.
