Nowadays, discussions on security are dominated by the issue of security risks. However, there is a lack of publications and scientific findings that point at the dangers from contemporary types of risks and their threat to the citizens' vital interests and, first and foremost, their security.

The authors state that, as a result of the changes to the character of risks due to globalisation and postmodernism, today, external risks are predominant in the Macedonian society, too. They conclude that complex globalised and postmodern societal relations contribute to a spread of security risks throughout the country and the region.

The character of risks under the circumstances of globalisation influences the character of security risks in today's life. The definitions of the character of risks as negative (security) risks, spawned by postmodernism and globalisation, have an impact on the definition of the character of risks as security risks in the Republic of North Macedonia.

The aim of the book is to establish a methodology for mapping the elements of risks, such as data for identifying dangers, exposure to potential elements of threat, information on their vulnerability and on the system's capacity (resources) of crisis management, which can be used for prevention and coping with potential risks and their consequences.

So far, scientific research in the area of security risks in the Republic of Macedonia has been scarce, which adds even more to the significance of the book by university professors Gjurovski, Nikolovski and Gerasimovski. Due to the fact that we are living in a risk society in which the number of security risks is growing and they are becoming increasingly fluid and multi-faceted, the study at hand is based on a contemporary theoretical framework for analysing today's risks as a societal and security problem, first and foremost in the context of today's situation in society and the situation of the state and its security institutions. The aim of this analysis is to determine the main characteristics of security risks that are typical for globalised and postmodern societies.
