The first USSR thermonuclear test was conducted at the Semipalatinsk test site in Kazakhstan. The seven-ton RDS-6s device suitable for Tu-16 bomber was developed by Andrei Sakharov who later became a campaigner for nuclear disarmament and human rights. Its yield was about 400 kilotons (0.4 megatons).
