Smart Grids and their potentials in Namibia's electricity sector

How can renewable energies be utilised in order to provide electricity for Namibia in a safe and sustainable manner? What role will the respective grid infrastructure and their smart management play? These were the key questions that Namibian energy expert Dr. Detlof von Oertzen answered during his presentation on Smart Grid Management in the NamPower Convention Centre on the 12 October. The term Smart Grid refers to a modern electricity transmission, distribution and supply grid. By using modern information and communication technology, smart grid is able to coordinate the generation, distribution and storage of electricity. The utilisation of solar and wind energy is dependent on fluctuations in climate and changes during the course of the day. These kinds of fluctuations have a significant impact on power supply. A smarter grid is able to maximise reliability, resilience and stability by implementing a supply and demand infrastructure. At this point of time (Oct. 2017) Namibia imports 60% of its energy. Furthermore the countries power supply is based on a centralised network structure. Taking a closer look at the Tx system within the country, one can observe an extensive north south backbone. Taking into consideration the increasing number of consumers, the limited access to electricity and the growing import dependence, Namibia needs to convert its immense solar resources into competitive advantages. In order to implement a smarter grid, end-users and prosumers need to be willing and able to participate. In addition the Tx, Dx and supply grid need to be modernised. Our future electricity supply will be based on renewable energy resources. Therefore smartening up the gird is essential to add value for all participants.
