I have something to say about my future

9 May – Europe Day

On 27 April 2021, an online student debate on the topic "I have something to say about my future" was held on the occasion of 9 May, Europe Day. KAS organised the event in cooperation with the European Movement in the Republic of North Macedonia and the Delegation of the European Union in the Republic of North Macedonia. With 40 students from several universities in the country participating, the debate was an excellent opportunity to hear what kind of society young people want to live in.

The President of the European Movement Mileva Gjurovska invited the students to talk about the challenges they face and the European values which are important to them, and to share their opinions with the public.

The Official Representative of KAS Daniel Braun encouraged the young people not to remain silent, democracy does not end when the Members of Parliament and Government are elected; on the contrary, there are still many important topics to talk about every day.

During the debate, the students focused on education, the rule of law, democratisation of the society, as well as the eradication of poverty and unemployment as key factors in building European values.

Despite the fact that the debate was dominated by the students' negative perception of the current situation, emigration and poor perspectives and their disappointment with the stagnation of the EU integration process, some optimistic messages and discussions could also be heard. Some students did not agree that the young people should leave the country, but think that they should rather stay and fight for a better future. According to some students, the country's EU membership will not solve the problems in the society, but they should be solved by the state and the citizens.

The student debate was the kick-off event for the traditional celebration of Europe Day with its series of activities for the promotion of European values, which the European Movement organises every year in cooperation with KAS and the Delegation of the European Union.
