Stabilizing the War-Torn Economy in Libya

Policy Recommendations for EU Action

Finding sustainable solutions to stabilise the economy in Libya requires a holistic approach as the key economic issues link into all different aspects of the Libyan conflict. Economic realities cannot be dealt with in isolation from the political process and the highly complex security architecture in the country.

Against this background, the KAS Regional Program South Mediterranean together with the KAS Multinational Development Policy Dialogue Brussels  and the Open Society European Policy Institute organized a briefing in the European Parliament on 2 April 2019 hosted by MEP Cristian Preda, Foreign Affairs Coordinator of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, on stabilizing the Libyan economy.

During the briefing that included a key note by Stephanie T. Williams, Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Libya experts from think tanks, the European Commission and the private sector discussed the economic policy recommendations of a KAS Libya Task Force as well as the prospects of a broader and more coherent approach of the EU in Libya. ​​​​​​​
