Since the Russian attack on Ukraine, Romania's responsibility in the European security architecture has increased. As part of our foreign, security and defense policy engagement in Romania, we analyze current developments, explain them to our German target groups and invite Romanian actors to our European and international security and defense policy networks.
What are we going to do specifically in 2023?
We think that in Germany there is too little reporting on developments in the field of security and defense policy in Romania. To change this, we invite German journalists, podcasters and youtubers from the field of "Security & Defense" to Romania. We want to give an introduction and establish contacts in order to broaden the basis for more information transfer to Germany.
For Romania, the “Bucharest 9” format is an important forum for coordinating security and defense policy with its Eastern European partners, the USA and NATO. Germany is not a member and therefore hardly notices the “Bucharest 9” format. In the future we want to report regularly on the topics and resolutions of the "B9 meetings" in order to convey more knowledge about the interests and issues of the Eastern European neighboring countries to Germany.
In cooperation with the Chair of Political Science at the University of Bucharest, students learn how to analyze current developments, anticipate future challenges and model solutions as part of the lecture series "Solutions for Tomorrow's Challenges".
With our partner CPC-EW (Center for Conflict Prevention and Early Warning) we will publish “Mapping the road towards a new European Security Architecture: Are there new foldlines between East and West?” in Bucharest and discuss with Romanian experts.
Every year, the Bratislava Global Security Forum (GLOBSEC) takes place as a central format in Eastern Europe for the exchange between civil society and government representatives. KAS is a long-standing partner of GLOBSEC. This year we want to participate with a delegation from Romania for the first time.
In addition, we regularly publish country reports in which we present foreign, security and defense policy developments in Romania for our German target group. We are also happy to offer briefings for interested groups from Germany.
