African Policy Circle 2023

The African Policy Circle Annual Meeting held in Accra, Ghana, from December 4th to 6th, 2023, brought together experts, policymakers, and think tank leaders to discuss the theme, "Where is Africa in a Changing World: Active Contributor or Inert Observer?" Organized by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Political Dialogue Sub-Saharan Africa (KAS PolDiSSA) and think tanks regrouped under the APC such as the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), the Democracy Development Program (DDP), Good Governance Africa (GGA) and Centre for the Study of the Economies of Africa (CSEA) just to mention a few, the event addressed critical questions about Africa's position in the global geopolitical landscape. Moreover, representatives from Solutions Think Tank joined this year’s APC meeting and contributed to a richer discussion as well as wider perspective in the conversation.

The conference opened with a keynote address by Dr. Vladimir Antwi-Danso from the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD). Dr. Antwi-Danso delved into the dynamics of Africa's role in the evolving global order. Following which, several panels addressed pressing issues, including Africa's response to global crises, its relationship with major powers, and the impact of technology on international relations. Notable discussions included Stephen Mwachofi Singo, Thelma Nyarhi, and Charles Nyuykonge exploring Africa's handling of global crises and the importance of strategic actions.

A panel on Africa's economic challenges, moderated by Francis Maberi, delved into the rising cost of living and the prospects of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA). The discussions highlighted the need for proactive measures to overcome economic challenges. The meeting also featured conversation focused on shaping the future agenda of the African Policy Circle (APC). Dr. Paul Kariuki, DDP Executive Director, led discussions on APC's priorities for 2024, emphasizing the importance of a collaborative approach in addressing Africa's challenges.

Throughout the event, speakers and panellists reiterated Africa's potential as a global player but highlighted obstacles such as climate change, trade integration, and governance issues. The need for Africa to strengthen its resilience, voice, and capacity to navigate global challenges was emphasized. The meeting extended beyond the conference room, offering participants an optional Accra city tour on Thursday, December 6th. Delegates had the opportunity to explore Ghana's rich culture and history, fostering a sense of collaboration and understanding.

In summary, the African Policy Circle Annual Meeting 2023 in Accra was a pivotal platform for experts and leaders to deliberate on Africa's evolving role in the global arena. The insights and recommendations generated during the event are poised to contribute significantly to shaping Africa's future engagement and position in a dynamically changing world.
