The Promoting Democracy Worldwide: Learning SDGs Through Singapore’s Green Initiatives program, held from November 15–16, 2024, brought together KAS Scholars from the Asian University of Women and National College, Kathmandu University. Designed to enhance understanding of sustainable development and urban planning, the program provided participants with unique insights into Singapore’s innovative practices. It also fostered cross-cultural dialogue and knowledge exchange, creating a platform for collaboration and leadership development.

The program’s objectives centered on promoting meaningful dialogue, increasing knowledge, building leadership skills, and strengthening global networks. Participants engaged in discussions with local experts and practitioners, exploring key aspects of sustainability and leadership from diverse cultural perspectives. By examining Singapore’s solutions for urban and environmental challenges, the program showcased practical examples of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) implementation and their relevance across global contexts.

On the first day, participants attended engaging sessions at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS). Topics included Singapore’s multicultural policies, public safety innovations, and urban planning strategies, complemented by a visit to the Singapore City Gallery. The day concluded with a dinner discussion led by Elmar Brok, where participants explored bridging the gap between science and policy. This interactive session provided valuable insights into collaborative approaches for addressing global challenges and translating research into action.

Day two featured visits to the Sustainable Singapore Gallery at Marina Barrage and the Chinatown Heritage Centre. These sessions highlighted Singapore’s water management systems, renewable energy initiatives, and efforts to balance cultural preservation with urban growth. Participants reflected on these experiences during an interactive workshop, which inspired them to establish a collaborative network. This network will focus on SDG advocacy, enabling ongoing engagement and actionable solutions for their communities.

The program’s success was reflected in participants’ positive feedback, which emphasized its well-planned structure and impactful learning experiences. Many valued the opportunity to engage with experts, peers, and local communities while building valuable networks. The program’s comprehensive approach not only enhanced participants’ understanding of sustainable development but also empowered them to become changemakers committed to SDG advocacy and implementation in their home countries.
