MAPUTO: Mozambique became the eleventh SADC country to have its media policy environment studied in a new book launched by KAS in December. Leis da Midia: Mocambique, the sixth book in KAS's Media Law Series, is a comprehensive summary of all laws affecting freedom of expression and the media that were enacted in Mozambique before recent debates about revising the National Press Law.

Head of the KAS Media programme for sub-Saharan Africa, Frank Windeck said the media should empower the public to build democracy and redress political and economic injustice through public communication. “However, ignorance of media law and ethical obligations undermines journalists’ capacity to perform their social function,” he said.

Leis da Midia: Mocambique was researched and written by Justine White, Daddy Bujitu and Ivan Macoo from the South African law firm of Mukwevho Huntley Adekeye Inc. White is a Senior Fellow in Communications Law at the Mandela Institute at the School of Law in South Africa and a specialist in Telecommunications Law, Media law and Space and Satellite law.

This edition reviews current media law issues, including censorship, registration of journalists, the independence of the media sector, insult laws and ethics. Views of journalists and media specialists on the state of Mozambican media are also included. Leis da Midia remains the most current Portuguese and English reference for journalists, editors, students and investors on the media environment in Mozambique.
