Local news is the backbone of journalism, yet it often receives insufficient support despite its crucial role in informing communities. In an era of global democratic challenges, the need for robust, well-resourced local journalism has never been greater—especially when covering elections.
Dubbed the "Super Election Year", 2024 saw over 60 countries worldwide head to the polls, with 18 African nations participating in pivotal elections. However, contested results, postponed votes, and electoral violence raised urgent questions about the integrity of these processes. In many African countries, mistrust in electoral bodies, intimidation of opposition parties, and unfair campaign practices continue to undermine democracy.
How can local newsrooms ensure accurate, unbiased, and independent election coverage? Are journalists trained to navigate complex election laws? With artificial intelligence and disinformation playing an increasing role in shaping public perception, how can we equip citizens with the tools to discern fact from fiction?
KAS Media Africa will explore these pressing questions in a three-day conference in Addis Ababa from March 4th to 6th, 2025. Together with a selection of editors and media experts from Africa and Germany, we aim to strengthen local journalism as a pillar of democracy.
