Mapping Middle Eastern Alliances

Mediterranean Advisory Group Meeting

The workshop organized by the Regional Program South Mediterranean of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in cooperation with the Casa Árabe, took a closer look at old and new patterns of Middle Eastern alliances. It assessed the major changes in regional cooperation trends both among states and between states and non-state actors. It further identified clusters of new alliance paradigms, and discussed the impact that the combination of these new patterns may have on the future of the region’s geopolitics and security.

In an environment of global geopolitical transition, long-standing alliance patterns erode. At the same time, the multiple uncertainties over how the world of tomorrow will be governed, by whom, and under which norms, appear to favor interest-based cooperation among geopolitical actors alongside more structural partnerships. In the Middle East and North Africa, the past decade has seen both erosion and consolidation of long-standing partnerships, and the emergence of a variety of interest-based cooperation, adding up to a complex web of overlapping, alliances, interests and antagonisms.

Against this backdrop, the KAS Regional Program South Mediterranean in collaboration with  Casa Árabe organized this workshop with our Mediterranean Advisory Group, which consists of experts on the different actors in the regional context. A summary report will follow soon in order to present the main findings of the expert meeting to the wider public.
