Eines der zentralen Schwerpunktthemen der deutschen EU-Ratspräsidentschaft und des deutschen Vorsitzes der G8 2007 ist die Energiesicherheit. Angesichts weltweit wachsendem Energiebedarf, knapper werdender Ressourcen, steigender Öl- und Gaspreise und der Gefahr des Klimawandels erlangen erneuerbare Energien, also die Erzeugung von Strom aus Solarenergie, Wind- und Wasserkraft, Biomasse und Erdwärme, eine immer größere Bedeutung. Ziel des Internationalen Zukunftskongresses ist es, die Potentiale erneuerbarer Energien für Entwicklungsländer zu beleuchten.
