MEKONG INTERNATIONAL FORUM 2024

ENERGY TRANSITION FOR A SUSTAINABLE MEKONG SUB-REGION

Hanoi, 27 September 2024 - The fourth edition of the Mekong Forum series, themed “Energy Transition for a Sustainable Mekong Sub-Region,” was successfully organized by Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Vietnam in collaboration with the Institute for Foreign Policy and Strategic Studies at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam. This hybrid event attracted around 120 participants, including national scholars, experts from Mekong countries, and representatives of diplomatic institutions, to address the multifaceted challenges of energy transition in the region. And, we are delighted to have the participation of German expert Dr. Frederick Kliem who is from KAS Regional Programme on Energy Security and Climate Change Asia-Pacific (RECAP).

Since its inception in 2022, the annual Mekong Forum has focused on various critical topics such as synergy among mechanisms for sustainable growth, ASEAN centrality in addressing challenges in Mekong Sub-Region, the changing geopolitical landscape in the Mekong. And, this year, the forum emphasized energy transition in the Mekong Sub-Region, addressing geopolitical, environmental, and socio-economic aspects while promoting regional cooperation and sustainable practices.

In the opening session, Ambassador Dr. Pham Lan Dung, Acting President of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, highlighted the pivotal changes in the global energy landscape. Energy transition is now at the forefront of global and regional discussions. The UN Future Summit in September issued the Declaration on Future Generations, emphasizing the importance of providing future generations with a sustainable and just planet. Achieving this vision requires a shift to a low-carbon energy system and ensuring clean energy access for all. This transition represents a fundamental transformation in how our economies and societies operate.

Addressing the event, Florian Constantin Feyerabend, Resident Representative of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Vietnam, noted the immense potential for renewable energy development in the Mekong region. With abundant solar, wind, and hydro-power resources, and the right policies and investments, these clean energy sources can become the cornerstone of a sustainable energy future. However, generating clean energy is just one part of the equation. The transition to a low-carbon economy must also include innovations in energy storage, grid management, and efficiency improvements. Policy reforms and investments are needed to drive this transformation, ensuring that all communities benefit from the process. The journey ahead may be challenging, but with determination, collaboration, and a unified vision, we can build a brighter and more sustainable future for the Mekong Sub-Region.
