Reactions and analysis
According to NPR, the U.S. is now in "uncharted territory." The Republicans (GOP) had no plans for this outcome. Republican strategist Ron Bonjean told the radio station that on the one hand he was shocked, but on the other hand it was surprising that McCarthy had stayed in office so long - given the dynamics in the House of Representatives. He doesn't think the Speaker's eight Republican opponents had a plan for what was going to happen after this result. GOP Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks said the vote was disappointing and frustrating. NPR recalled that when McCarthy was elected in January, it took him 15 rounds of voting before he got enough votes from his own ranks. Among his concessions was the right for an individual congressman to call for a vote on his recall.
