Shigeru Ishiba will become Japan's next Prime Minister. In a dramatic final round of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leadership election, Shigeru Ishiba emerged victorious over Sanae Takaichi. With this win, it is now certain: Ishiba will become Japan's next Prime Minister.

The path to the top was anything but easy for Shigeru Ishiba, a controversial figure within the party. As a political veteran, former LDP Secretary General, Minister of Defence and Minister of Agriculture, the 67-year-old has been a household name in Japan for over three decades. Nevertheless, he has repeatedly found it difficult to win the support of his party colleagues. Ishiba had to endure four unsuccessful attempts at the party presidency before finally making the breakthrough in his fifth and final attempt.
