Details
The United Kingdom government is engaged in a huge programme of welfare reform including measures to improve the flexibility of the labour market, get the unemployed back into jobs and support them in work. The past months have also seen broad discussions on the question of how to deal with welfare migration. The debate in the UK has focused on EU migrants and their access to benefits. As in a number of Member States, this has led to recent reforms implemented by the UK government.

Iain Duncan Smith MP
Secretary of State for Work and Pensions (since May 2010)
Born 1954 in Edinburgh.
Iain was educated at Dunchurch College of Management, the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst and the Universita per Stranieri in Perugia, Italy.
After serving in the Scots Guards, Iain worked for General Electric.
Iain has been the Conservative MP for Chingford and Woodford Green (in Greater London) since 1992. He was Shadow Secretary of State for Social Security from 1997 to 1999 and Shadow Secretary of State for Defence from 1999 to 2001. He was Leader of Conservative Party and the Opposition from 2001 to 2003.
In 2004, he founded the Centre for Social Justice to help tackle poverty and remained Chairman of the organisation until taking up the post of Secretary of State.
Iain Duncan Smith was appointed Secretary of State for Work and Pensions by Prime Minister David Cameron in May 2010.
