Keynote speech on foreign and security policy by Minister-President Armin Laschet
YouTube
Germany and Europe are facing a changed international environment and complex challenges. While the world is struggling with the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, a new dynamic in international security affairs is emerging on the horizon. From great power competition between the US as well as China and Russia to challenges in Europe’s neighbourhood – the security environment of the 2020s demands fundamental adaptations in EU and NATO. How can Germany and its partners react to these challenges? What political decisions should a new federal government take in order to be prepared for the complex security environment of the 2020s?
On 19 May, we would like to take up these questions and discuss Germany’s role in security affairs with a keynote address on foreign and security affairs by Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia and CDU Chairman, Armin Laschet, and KAS Chairman and former President of the Bundestag Prof. Dr Norbert Lammert.
On 20 May, the discussion should consider Afghanistan 20 years after 9/11 and the state of transatlantic relations and expectations from the US towards Germany.
We would like to invite you to submit your questions to Armin Laschet and our other panellists in advance. Selected questions will be answered and discussed in the course of the event. Please send your questions to simon.rutz@kas.de by 17 May.
The event will take place digitally in German, English, French and Spanish.
A livestream of the discussion can be accessed on www.kas.de, Facebook, and YouTube. The event will also take place via Zoom. Please register under the respective link.
