On the political map of the world, Vietnam is one of the few remaining communist countries. At the same time, however, the country has been able to establish itself as an influential player in Southeast Asia and a supporter of the rules-based international order.
Germany and Vietnam have maintained a Strategic Partnership since 2011. During the German EU Council Presidency and the Vietnamese ASEAN Chairmanship in 2020, a strategic partnership between ASEAN and the EU was decided, and the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) entered into force in August 2020. In the Indo-Pacific strategies and policy guidelines of important international actors, Vietnam plays a prominent role. In the 2020/2021 term, Vietnam was actively committed to multilateralism, the primacy of international law and a rules-based international order as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. However, Vietnam abstained from voting at the UN General Assembly on March 2, 2022 on the resolution "Aggression against Ukraine".
On the occasion of a delegation visit by representatives of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation will discuss the partnership between Germany and Vietnam, as well as specific foreign and security policy challenges for the Southeast Asian country.
The conference will take place on 16 May as an onsite event at the Academy of the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation (Tiergartenstraße 35, 10785 Berlin) and will be interpreted in German/English. Please register using the appropriate link by May 12th. When registering for attendance, please note: There is a limited number of places available. Proof of 3G (fully vaccinated, recovered, or tested) is required at the venue.
