While in some places the arrival of spring and the resulting rainfalls in the last few weeks have already brought some relief, the region around the Ecuadorian capital Quito was still affected by severe forest fires until a few days ago. The government has requested international assistance.
The extreme drought, which is the consequence of last year’s El Niño weather phenomenon, is one of the reasons for the numerous forest fires that South America is currently experiencing.
