Survey on Albanian-Greek Relations

A survey by ACGG & KAS

This study, conducted by the Albanian Center for Good Governance with the support of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, provides an in-depth analysis of Albanian citizens' perceptions of Greece, Greeks, and the relations between the two neighboring countries. The survey was conducted in November 2024 and included 905 respondents from across the country, ensuring a broad and comprehensive perspective.

Key issues addressed in the survey

 

  • Bilateral relations between Albania and Greece – 77% of Albanians consider maintaining good relations with Greece very important.

  • The Çam issue – 73% of respondents are aware of this topic, while 53% see it as an obstacle to improving relations.

  • The "Northern Epirus" issue – Perceived as a nationalist claim from Greece but does not have the same sensitivity as the Cham issue.

  • The Beleri case – 52% of respondents believe there are more important issues than this case in bilateral relations.

  • Trust in the Albanian judiciary – 41% of respondents believe the judicial system is neither independent nor impartial.

  • Contribution of Albanian emigrants to Greece – 96% of Albanians acknowledge the role of emigrants in Greece’s economic development.

  • Status of the Greek minority in Albania – 79% of respondents believe that the Albanian government respects the rights of the Greek minority.

  • Perceptions on Albania’s EU membership – Albanians are divided on whether Greeks support Albania’s European integration.

  • Economic relations – 45% believe that both countries have benefited equally, while 51% think Greece has gained more.

  • Attitude towards Greeks and the Greek minority – The majority hold positive or neutral views, with only 1.2% reporting negative relations.
