Statistical Study on Religious Belief in Albania

Authors: Bashkim Shehu and Eduard Zaloshnja

Albania stands as one of the most unique examples of state-enforced atheism in the world. During the communist totalitarian regime, religion was outlawed, and from 1967 to 1990, belief in God and the practice of religion were considered as crimes against the state, punishable by three to ten years in prison.

However, the repression began as early as the post-World War II rise of communism, marking an unprecedented effort by the regime to exert control even over personal faith.

The political shift in the 1990s revealed that Albanians remained deeply rooted in their faith, proving that despite 23 years of systemic terror and repression, religious belief remained a profound element of human identity.

Three decades later, the long-lasting effects of that period are reflected in the current trends of religious belief in Albania. This article seeks to explore and analyze these developments, offering a deeper look into the role of religion in contemporary Albanian society.
