The political climate in autumn 2023 is characterized by profound uncertainty and dissatisfaction, which has the potential to significantly change the political landscape. Across all voter groups, pessimism dominates and even resignation clouds the view of the future. This mood is not only attributable to specific political events or decisions, but rather appears to be an expression of a general loss of confidence in the ability of political institutions to respond adequately to the challenges of the time.
Some of the results:
• The topic of migration and integration was discussed particularly virulently, both in the AfD and mixed voter groups.
• The economy and prosperity are perceived as increasingly precarious. The fear of social decline and the loss of the standard of living achieved pervades the discussions.
• In mixed voter groups, confidence in the competence of the established parties is severely shaken. Voting motives can hardly be verbalized, rather disappointment with the political and technical work dominates the picture. The AfD, on the other hand, is seen by voters as a beacon of hope, although here too there are doubts about the implementation of its promises.
• The greatest disagreement between the AfD and mixed voter groups can be seen in the way the state of democracy in Germany is perceived. While the former see their freedom of expression restricted and denounce the exclusion of AfD supporters from the democratic discourse, the mixed groups see the rise of the AfD and the growth of anti-democratic and far-right attitudes in the population as a threat to democracy.
