On Friday, September 29 2017, the International Security Conference “Forte de Copacabana” took place in Rio de Janeiro. The topic of this year’s Conference was “Security Architecture: An Exchange between South America and Europe”. Norbert Lammert, President of the German Federal Parliament (Bundestag) and Vice-President of Konrad Adenauer Foundation, and Raul Jungmann, Brazilian Minister of Defence, held the main speeches. In particular, the topics new world order, cyber security and defence as well as international drug trafficking and organized crime were discussed by a multitude of international experts, among them Nathalie Tocci, Special Adviser to the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Lieutenant-General Chris Whitecross, Commander of the NATO Defense College in Rome, Roderich Kiesewetter, Member of the German Federal Parliament for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), as well as Alexis Goosdeel, Director of the European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction. As innovation in 2017, the Conference, which has become the biggest security conference in Latin America over the 14 years of its history, published a series of Policy Papers that reflects the major themes of the event, identify challenges and make policy recommendations for the future.
