Changed political realities in Germany and the role of CDU/CSU as the opposition leader

Online Event

2021 was a significant year for German politics. After 16 years and four legislative terms, Chancellor Angela Merkel did not run again in the Federal Elections and left the political stage. What most experts rightfully describe as the “end of an era” came also with a new political landscape. Due to severe losses of CDU and CSU, other political parties were able to form a coalition and did so in December. Since then, Germany is governed by the first “Ampelkoalition” (consisting of Social Democrats, Liberals and Greens) on the Federal level led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Both EPP parties were left with no other option than to accept their role as leader of the opposition, in which they are joined by the far-left party Die Linke and the far-right AfD. While the new government agreed on an ambitious coalition agreement with a strong emphasize on the fight against climate change, economic recovery after the pandemic as well as modernization of the coun- try in general, CDU/CSU find themselves in a situation in which they last have been from 1998 to 2005.

Details

How do CDU and CSU assess the priorities of the new coalition and which role do they intend to play as the only opposition party in the center of the political spectrum? Which ramifications might the new gov- ernment’s policies have on a European level and to what extent are major shifts from previous positions to be expected? Which conclusions have CDU and CSU drawn from the worst result in a Federal Election in history and what are the main goals for the next elections to come?

The event “Changed political realities in Germany and the role of the CDU/CSU as the opposition leader” will take place on Wednesday, 09 February 2022 from 16:00-17:00 via Zoom. The above-mentioned questions will be discussed virtually with Ronja Kemmer MdB, Member of the German Bundestag for Christlich Demokratische Union Deutschlands (CDU). After a short introduction and keynote by Mrs Kemmer, the participants will have the chance to ask questions and share their perspectives on recent political changes in Germany and how these could affect bilateral relations as well as cooperation on the European level.

The participants will be representatives from the EPP Youth Organizations in Austria (Junge ÖVP), Belgium (JONG CD&V and Jeunes cdH), Germany (Junge Union), Luxembourg (CSJ) and the Netherlands (CDJA).
