The Morning After

France has voted

The European Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung is very pleased to invite you to the next session of our event format "The Morning After". In this online format, we are monitoring the Parliamentary and/or Presidential Elec-tions in European states and discuss the results with our KAS colleagues in the respective country. Furthermore, we try to assess the implications the result could have for the country’s relationship with the European Union. This ses-sion will focus on France, where the second round of the Parliamentary Elections is scheduled for 07 July 2024.

Details

On 07 July 2024, French citizens will be called upon to fill the 577 seats in the Assemblée nationale (National Assembly) in the second round of Parliamentary Elections. Following his party's poor performance in the European Elections at the beginning of June, President Emmanuel Macron announced the dissolution of parliament and the organisation of new elections, to the surprise of many political observers at home and abroad. Since then, the country has been in the midst of a turbulent election campaign in which the far-right party of Marine Le Pen (Rassemblement National) - fuelled by its strong performance in the European Elections - has been reaching for its next success. Numerous left-wing political forces (including the once strong Socialists) had joined forces in the run-up to the election to form the so-called "New Popular Front" (Nouveau Front populaire) in order to counter the feared rise of the right-wing populists. Before the election, the Ensemble alliance, led by the President of the Republic, was predicted to perform poorly, which could drastically change the majority in parliament. The results of the first round last Sunday confirmed the trend of a shift to the right and saw the Rassemblement National as the strongest force with over 30 per cent of the vote, followed by the "New Popular Front", which won around 28 per cent. Emmanuel Macron's party alliance lost significantly and only received around 20 per cent of the vote. As an absolute majority is required to enter parliament in France, there will now be a run-off election for the parliamentary mandate in most constituencies.

Who are the winners and who are the losers of the Parliamentary Elections 2024? What conclusions can be drawn from the results of the two rounds about the political mood in the country? How will the result affect the country's domestic and European policy and what room for manoeuvre will Emmanuel Macron have for his remaining term of office?

The event „The Morning After – France has voted” will take place on Tuesday, 09 July 2024 from 09:30-10:15 CET via Zoom. We look forward to discussing the election result with our colleague Anja Czymmeck, Director of the KAS Office in France. After the conversation between Ms Czymmeck and Dr. Beatrice Gorawantschy, Director of the European Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, the audience will have the opportunity to contribute their questions to the discussion. The event will be held in German with simultaneous interpretation into English. We look forward to your participation!
