The outcome of the 2021 federal election is anticipated with great excitement in Germany and Europe. After 16 years of Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel (CDU) governing the country,  the question of who will become the next Chancellor and which parties will be involved in the next government  arises. In addition to the focal points of the German national political discourse, there is also the question of whether - and if yes in what way - Germany's position in the European Union will change. The polls have recently indicated a duel between the CDU/CSU with its top candidate, North Rhine-Westphalian Premier and CDU Chairman Armin Laschet, and the Social Democrats with their candidate Finance Minister Olaf Scholz. Behind them, "Bündnis90/Die Grünen" (Alliance 90/The Greens), which for the first time has put forward its own candidate for chancellorship, Annalena Baerbock, the Liberals (FDP) and the right-wing populists of the AfD are fighting for third place, a position of decisive importance for the question of coalition formation. The Left Party is also likely to make it into the German Bundestag again. In addition to dealing with the Corona pandemic, the issues of economic development, climate change , and digitization as well as innovation will play an important role and shape the political direction of the Federal Republic in the coming months and years.

How should we evaluate the outcome of the 2021 federal election? What might the first government of the post-Merkel era look like and what priorities might it set? What implications do the election results and the various coalition options have for Germany’s European policy?
